Hakusan Porcelain Co., Ltd.
Hakusan Porcelain Co, Ltd. was founded in Hasami, Nagasaki-ken. It was originally founded in 1779 and in its current company form since 1958. The city of Hasami has a 400-year tradition in ceramics. The special feature of the ceramic of Hasami is the translucent beauty of white porcelain. There are still numerous ceramic studios and companies in the Hasami area. The traditional ceramic production is concentrated mainly in the production of teacups and teapots. Hakusan has been the leading porcelain manufacturer in post-war Japan lead by the designer Masahiro Mori. Hakusan has constantly proposed high quality tableware of high quality design to the consumers. Hakusan products have been granted for example ”Good Design” and ”Long Life Design” prizes. The porcelain ware of Hakusan is known as an example of Japanese simple design. |

Masahiro Mori (1927 2005)
Masahiro Mori is one of Japan’s most famous porcelain designers. He studied at the department of industrial design of the Tama art university and joined the design unit of Hakusan Tōki in 1956. Two years later, in 1958, he designed the G-model soysauce pitcher that became the symbol of Hakusan. In the same year, Mori participated in a Kaj Franck workshop that was held in Tokyo . The meeting lead into a relationshop of mutual exchange. They met again when Mori visited Finland twice. ”I want to give form to tableware that people can use every day. The factory production makes it possible that many people can enjoy them in their own daily life. That is my pleasure as a designer.” The porcelain ware that was born out of Mori’s design philosophy changed the look of the necessary tableware in the new life of post-war Japan. He has received many prizes in Japan and in other countries. His last work was to design the ”Wa” series for Muji in 2004. Mujirushi Ryōhin is a company with a wide selection products and many shops worldwide. Mori worked approximately 20 years as a designer for Hakusan. His relationship with Hakusan continued as a consulting designer even after he left the company in 1978. Four designers at Hakusan are following his design philosophy. |
